Opening Credits
The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo in 9 shots
The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo is a crime, drama, mystery, horror film genre produced in 2009 by Niels Arden Oplev. I was really engaged in this opening when i first watched it and it really stood out to me from all the other openings i had researched. The whole opening seem's like its coated in black oil which has a really interesting look and effect. It uses high tech technology and has great use of CGI (computer generated imagery) It goes against conventions of other film openings. It does not start with the animations of the institutions but just a line of white text to inform the audience. This keeps focus on the film and the mood it is trying to create.
The credits have a surreal mood and there are many unusual and abstract links to the plot and trilogy including lots of hands, the wasp and the dragon at the end of the text. We are also never really introduced to any characters and all the shot's and images are quite difficult to understand in come up in quick succession. This opening has a sense of an enigma code and semiology type of plot as it is very jumpy and has lots of images that don't quite add up but in some way they all fit together.
I also found it interesting that in this article http://www.wired.com/underwire/2012/01/dragon-tattoo-opening-titles/ the director says his main goal for the opening credits was to 'redefine titles for our generation the way Se7en' which i have also previously researched. I like the twist they have taken on the well known song Immigrant song by Led Zeppelin. It creates a completely new vibe and is really tension building and intense to listen to.
This video is really interesting to watch- It show's the making of the opening we can see how complex the design was and how high tech the development of the opening was.
From this opening i will take-
- Sometimes It's good to go off conventions it brings a fresh, new & interesting idea for an opening
- Edge away from filming and have a look at using CGI more
- Old songs and sounds can be recreated to bring a new mood and sense to a film
- The plot can be hinted at and shown through many ways
