Potential characters & Costumes- Little Girl

Creepy Little girls in horror films
What is it that's so frightening about little girls in horror films? Little girls are a character used commonly in horror films and have become iconic in the horror genre to unease and frighten an audience. They do go against Propp's character theory but yet they come under and take many roles in horror narratives. They are sometimes the false hero, the villain, the princess a silent witness and sometimes even the donor for example come back from the dead to save the protagonist from something. They are very effective, perhaps because sometimes we don't expect the child do be capable of the things they are or we feel inferior to there character because of there age. In every day life children do not scare or challenge adults but in horror films they have the ability to really scare and have an effect on the audience . Stereo typically pale white skin, popping wide eyes, ready for church dresses and gripping on to teddy bears all used to frighten the audience.

  • I think in our film a feature of a scary young girl would be extremely gripping and effective to use in our opening. It would give a foreboding fear for the audience and help create tension in the short space of 2 minutes.
  • It would go with conventions of horror films however would be able to help our narrative be very unique and unfamiliar for the audience
  • I think this character will really play on audience's fears

The Grady twins  are partially spooky in 'The Shining' "Come and play with us Danny' The blank, emotionless faces are spooky and being twins its twice as scary. There innocence contrasted with what they have seen or what they do know is really frightening for the audience. Simple yet effective.

In 1973 The Exorcist hit the screens where Regen MacNeil became one of the most iconic spookiest girls in the history of horror. In the Exorcist we see her change from a lovely, sweet young girl into a possessed demon that does and say's unspeakable things. Gripping and a haunting well known, iconic character in the horror genre.

I found this trailer on Yahoo for a film called Dream House.
The music really effective. It plays on the innocence, child play & childhood. Very creepy and links to the strong focus on the two young girls. The sound effects of whispering voices is very spooky and would be great to use in our film also. It gives the feel of lots of voices, lots of spirits or unknown voices speaking. Spooky and foreboding. The sound effect of the little girl laughing non- diegetic is really spooky. I think this should also be used in our film. This film is in the physiological sub genre of horror- This is the genre my group will go down for our horror film. It is very deep and has many interesting story's that can be told within it. I like the way these films seem very realistic and lifelike but have supernatural themes too that can play on audiences emotions and still feel like it could be real. I love how jumpy this trailer is, the mix of setting, editing and sound really leaves you on your seat and after seeing this trailer i really want to watch the whole film.

Researching into previously used young girls in horror films has been good to look at costumes they are conventionally placed in. It seem's many are put in girly dresses or school uniform. Clothes that conceal there  evil and spooky characters. I think for our film we should go down similar ideas. We should use a white Victorian style dress. To cover her whole body and will make her look angelic. The dress signifies her age, her gender and how if you saw her in real life you would assume she is a innocent, happy little girl. Once the plot unravels this will be juxtaposed for the audience.
