What is suspense?
Suspense leaves the audience whether in a film, a book or a narrative fiction on the edge of there seats. It creates an uneasiness for the audience. Suspense leaves a worry and anxiety for the audience as to what the outcome of the situation will be. Most commonly suspense is used in thriller horror genre films. 'The condition of being physically and mentally suspended"Suspense is used in horror films to build on excitement and playing on the audiences worst fears. In fiction it is involved in the writes craft and commonly goes around conflict and the narrative of the book.
Suspense doesn't always have to be a huge build up to a massive car crash or a psychopath running after the protagonist but can be simple like a girl walking into a completely black room or eerie house (common conventions of horror films). Other examples-
- a deadline, or time frame that has to be completed i.e. a ticking bomb
- any mystery
- when the audience know something that the characters do not
- Anything in the narrative which portrays what next?
- Suspense works most effectively when it makes us care for the character and when we feel emotionally connected or concerned from them
